Known Trivia
- Virtually all of the young adults in the cast and crew had either worked at the Ellington Supermarket or gone to Ellington High School. Producer and lead actor Matt Jenkins had worked continuously at the Supermarket since he was fifteen years old. Director Timothy Norman was fired from the Supermarket while he was a senior in high school.
- Timothy Norman, Matt Jenkins, Dave Therrien, Pat Tanner, and Brian Madore first began discussing making a film about Ellington Supermarket in 2004, originally only intending to make a basic comedy re-enacting the countless anecdotes and exploits they all had from their years at the store. But, mirroring the plot of the film, the issue of suburban sprawl burst upon the town shortly thereafter as a big box chain store threatened to build on a farm beside the Ellington Supermarket. As debate raged throughout town and longtime residents began to fear for the future of the Ellington, the filmmakers decided to make their movie a rallying cry, a message to the people of the town to stand against the overdevelopment.
- The script was written in the summer of 2005, and the filmmakers intended to shoot the exterior scenes during August and early September. Timothy Norman would then return to Emerson College in Boston to complete shooting Beantown, and Ellington Supermarket interior scenes were to be shot during Christmas break. As Norman learned that Carolyne Burgess had already left for her freshman year at NYU, Nicki LaPorte was cast as Deirdre, and Dave Therrien would play the part that Bob Ondek later filled as the fourth friend. Unfortunately the first attempt at shooting exteriors that August and September ended in disaster and all the footage was scrapped. The filmmakers resolved to start from scratch on June 1st, 2006, and spent the time in between completing Beantown and working on preproduction for The Supermarket.
- In addition to Nicki LaPorte originally playing the character of Deirdre, Timothy Norman originally played himself as Timmy, Brian Therrien was intended to play the grocery manager Bill, and before Bob Ondek was brought on as the fourth friend Sean Fowler was going to be the replacement.
- Though the film was originally meant to serve as a warning to the residents of Ellington that the Supermarket would close and the once-rural town would face severe consequences if the big box store opened, by the time production started up again in the summer of 2006 it was too late. The big box store’s construction was well under way and it was known that the Ellington Supermarket would be closing its doors at an undetermined point in the summer. Thus the filmmakers devoted the entire first half of production solely to interior shooting, racing to complete all necessary scenes before the Supermarket closed, at many points hiding signs of emptying shelves.
- The bulk of the interior scenes were shot early in the morning before the Supermarket opened to customers, or after hours, when the cast and crew would be locked in overnight or until the floor cleaners came later on. As the filmmakers realized the sheer amount of filming they would have to do before they ran out of time they began shooting during afternoons and evenings as well when business slowed down. The daily shooting schedule would normally begin with Timothy Norman and Dave Therrien staying up all night preparing for the day’s filming, followed by a 4am-7:30am shoot, at which point the actors would go to work and Norman would continue with producing duties. Filming would resume at 4pm and continue until late at night. By the end of the interior shooting the cast and crew were exhausted from sleep deprivation, some logging more than two straight days without leaving the Supermarket.
- Inspired by tales of Francis Ford Coppola’s road-trip filming of The Rain People, the minivan known as the “TIE Bomber,” Pat’s vehicle in the film, was made into a mobile filming headquarters, used to store the massive amount of props, costumes, paperwork, and pieces of equipment necessary to make the film.
- Before being cast as the characters they eventually played, many actors were intended for other parts. Carolyne Burgess played a shopper extra in several scenes, and Bob Ondek was intended for the part Kristen Savage eventually played. Randy Paradis was simply going to cameo as the Legal Representative From S-Mart Corporation, as he was also busy in a local production of Macbeth at the time.
- Ed Reed (VI), father of longtime Lone Knight Productions collaborator Ed Reed, plays the store manager Mr. Wagner, a combination of two real-life people. Store manager Fran Munir was a patriarchal influence for many young employees at the Supermarket and a huge help getting filming allowed in the store during difficult hours. Night manager Al Wagner was another longtime employee who had known producer Matt Jenkins for many years. The Mercury Cougar driven by his character in the film was given to Jenkins by Wagner for free, thus prompting the “Al Rules” t-shirt worn by Jenkins throughout the movie.
- The “Wall of Honor” shown in the film was a representation of a real-life object in the Supermarket, a huge section of plywood wall in the back room used by employees to write the names of departing coworkers often paired with a humorous or poignant message. The real-life person on whom Pdoug Nadeau’s character is based had at least four separate entries from his long and complicated history at the Supermarket. When the Supermarket went out of business in 2006 and the building was gutted by private contractors for resale, it was assumed that the Wall was lost. However, a year later when inspecting the building, the structure was found to be absolutely empty – except for the plywood piece known as the Wall, which had been thoughtfully spared.

Story: To the young people of Ellington the Supermarket was many different things. Another home, a place they'd known as long as they can remember. A one-of-a-kind place to work, build friendships and have as much fun as possible without getting caught. The heart of their town, a farming community with more cows than people and the last outpost for Rockwell's America. But this summer Ellington, the Supermarket, and the young people who cared for it the most will grow up. A modern day Capraesque tale about growing into adulthood in small town USA, 'The Supermarket' is a story of laughter, love, old rivalries, coming home for the summer, barely functional cars, small triumphs and tragic loss, late-night lawbreaking, fearing the future, food fights, standing together, and finding your place in the world.Written by Anonymous

Ellington Supermarket was a part of my life. My parents shopped there, it was where we would go every Friday to buy our groceries. When it closed, it was like it created a little hole in my heart that remained unoccupied until this film came along to preserve its memory. Ellington Supermarket will never truly be gone, as long as this film is around to memorialize it.
